Steel blade with a nickel silver hilt. In good condition. During the Hungarian Revolution and War of Independence of 1848–1849, it was the cut-and-thrust weapon of units composed of Viennese and German volunteers (the Giron Legion – a military unit organised from ethnic German volunteers, recruited partly from Viennese volunteers, partly from the German population living in Hungary, and partly from Tyrolean riflemen). The unit, formed in revolutionary Vienna, fought on the side of the Hungarian War of Independence; therefore, this sword is regarded as an important artefact of Hungarian military history.
