Circa 1810. Andreas Hofer (November 22, 1767 – Mantua, Kingdom of Italy, February 20, 1810) was a Tyrolean freedom fighter and leader of the uprising against French and Bavarian occupation. After the defeat of the rebellion, he was executed by the French military authorities in Italy. Oil technique on iron plate. Unsigned, but his belt shows a 1809 date. Set in a gold-leafed and metal-embellished \\\"ox-eye\\\" frame. The mechanism, cleaned by a Viennese clockmaker, is a quarter-hour spiral gong clock that activates a musical mechanism playing two melodies alternately every hour. Fully functional.
